2022 Malta Architecture and Spatial Planning (MASP) Awards

We are proud to house three venues that were selected for the 2022 Malta Architecture and Spatial Planning (MASP) Awards. The MASP Awards, which are organised by the Planning Authority and are held under the patronage of the president of Malta, aim to promote and give recognition to quality architectural and interior design projects that promise to leave a positive mark for decades to come.

The Cisk Tap and The Grist Multipurpose Space by architectural firms Openworks Studio and Forward Architects were the winners of the Interior Architecture Award for Commercial or Public Buildings.

Located at The Brewhouse, the former Farsons Brewery, this project celebrates Malta’s industrial heritage and indeed the distinctive character of Cisk beer, so familiar to many on the Islands.  The Cisk Tap and the underlying Grist multi-purpose event space, work in synergy in function and reference the colours of the lager in their materiality.  The beer counter was placed centrally and dominantly in the space, in allusion to the way in which people gather together to enjoy a Cisk lager.

Kettles Café Bistro Bar by DAAA Haus also received a Special Commendation in this category

The Kettles Café Bistro Bar is also located at The Brewhouse and celebrates the restoration of three old beer kettles while making use of a previously unoccupied area.  Visitors to the bar are now able to appreciate the beauty of the large copper tanks that were part of the brewery, and that marked an important milestone in the rebirth and industrialisation of post war in Malta.  The beautiful warm colour of the antique kettles provides a perfect foil to the design, celebrating both new and old in the space.
